Workshops & Conferences

In addition to providing technical and training assistance in-country, SAGE organizes national and international workshops from Washington to bring together policy makers, practitioners, scholars and girls' education advocates to share knowledge and best practices and disseminate strategies for advancing girls' education. The following is a list of workshops and conferences held to date in Washington DC by the SAGE project.

USAID Workshop on Girls' Education

Working closely with USAID's Office of Women in Development (G/WID), and representatives of Juárez and Associates, EDC, AIR, and other cooperating organizations, SAGE Washington provided the planning, coordination, and technical and logistical support for a two-day workshop.  The workshop, hosting 45 participants including USAID Mission Education Officers and 5 GWE/GEA/SAGE host country coordinators, focused on incorporating all sectors into the planning and implementation of a girls’ education project, from the context analysis, strategy and design, to the management, monitoring and evaluation, and building of coalitions and networks to sustain girls’ education projects.

Institutional Advancement and Fundraising for Non-Traditional Program Partners
October 22, 1999
Dr. Antonio Rigual was contracted to present a seminar on strategies for local institutions to set and achieve realistic and sustainable human and financial resource targets.  The seminar was attended by approximately 20 project directors and associates and USAID staff.

USAID Forum on Girls' Education
December 1, 1999
Approximately 55 participants, representing policy makers, scholars and practitioners in girls’ education from bilateral and multilateral donors and cooperating agencies, took part in the eight topical and plenary sessions of the Forum.  The purpose of the Forum was to define current issues and perspectives on major topics in girls’ education.  The Forum Proceedings clarifies the main issues on girls’ educational programming and was a guiding reference for the 200-person Symposium held in May 2000.

USAID Symposium on Girls' Education
May 17-18, 2000
SAGE Washington convened a 200-person symposium sponsored by the USAID Office of Women in Development (G/WID).  The purpose of the Symposium was to consult on core topics and issues of controversy in girls' education and to develop implications for policy and practice.  The participants included 200 domestic and international “policy shapers”–senior planners, program managers, evaluators; researchers; international agency representatives; and other practitioners from the public and private sectors.  Over thirty countries were represented among the participants, from Peru to Pakistan, with approximately 80 participants arriving from outside of the United States. USAID Colloquium on HIV/AIDS and Girls' Education
October 25-26, 2000
The colloquium was the first ever event sponsored by a donor organization or government to explore the relationship of HIV/AIDS to girls’ education.  Over 150 participants attended the panel presentation on the first day and heard from a panel of top researchers and senior USAID officials, including Professor Alan Whiteside, director of the Health Economics and HIV/AIDS Research Division of the University of Natal, Durban, South Africa.  Keynote remarks were made by Uganda’s Ambassador to the United States, the Honorable Edith Ssempala. On the second day, approximately 40 participants met to discuss the results of the previous day’s panel discussions and to frame an agenda for collaborative and innovative responses to the crisis.
